Aiming to providing quality content, from those that live and breathe bass, Dub Selekta seeks to showcase the local and international talent through a West Coast / Canadian lens.
Started in 2010 by Amy Kirtay, Dub Selekta is a forward thinking electronic music blog and production company based out of Victoria BC. Growing to incorporate various crew members (including Matt Akela Sinesthetix and Asia Smasha) and working with local crews like Future Soul and PK Sound Victoria, Dub Selekta covers everything from Drum and Bass to Dubstep, Futuresounds to Trap, Breaks to Jungle.
An all-around electronic music aficionado, and the force behind Dub Selekta (a multimedia site that showcases forward-thinking low-end electronic music), Kirtay is an avid supporter of the West Coast bass community. When not writing about music, or keeping busy managing various projects for Dub Selekta, Kirtay can be found in front of her turntables. With a signature sound developed from her own cumulative musical journey, Kirtay’s sets connect the dots between jungle and juke, whilst dabbling in bits of drum and bass and footwork.
Matt Saunders’ latest project, Akela, infuses multiple genres on the warmer side of Bass Music, weaving groovy love stories with happy-go-lucky dancefloor bounciness. Be it House, UK Garage, Dubstep, Liquid Drum & Bass or Downtempo, Akela’s sound envelops the listener with a warm blanket of subsonic affection and intuitive funkiness.
Akela’s contributions to the Victoria music scene are ever growing with his partner Tedder at the successful Future Soul series at The Copper Owl; parties and club nights with his PIC Amy Kirtay at Dub Selekta; and constant behind-the-scenes support of the emerging future music crews in the YYJ. As a producer Akela has recently completed several soulful Liquid tunes, and currently runs The Embassy Podcast which focuses on local talent, as well as the Hydration Mix Series that started in January 2016 featuring BC’s most respected Liquid Drum & Bass DJs and has now amassed over 25,000 listens. Additional recent performances include Tall Tree, Rifflandia, and Shambhala.
Smasha is a veteran DJ with over a decade of experience behind her; first cutting her DJ chops in Calgary’s Drum & Bass scene through a number of high profile residencies. Initially a strictly vinyl DJ, she still remains one of the few remaining artists that you can consistently see carting her crates of records to each show. While her days are mostly now filled with being a Mom and day job responsibilities (where she flexes her other artistic abilities as a MAC makeup artist), she still finds time to regularly fit in DJing.
