We’re quite stoked to be bringing you the next installment in our podcast series from Vancouver’s own Daega Sound!
Big fans of the duo, brothers Ben and Josh collectively are Daega Sound and have been representing Vancouver’s bass sound in association with the LIGHTA Crew for some time. In fact, when I think about Vancouver’s dubstep scene, it was Daega Sound that was there amongst some of the first carving out the west coast sound. Their bio aptly describes their sound as being polished and sophisticated, with a dubbed out quality and heavy emphasis on sub bass. Intricate syncopated drum rhythms laced with unforgettable melodies sit on top of layers ethereal scapes and sounds creating an unmistakable atmosphere.
Getting nods from artists like Loxy, Appleblim, DJG, Mary Anne Hobbs and Mr Scruff, their works have been previewed on BBC Radio 1 in addition to receiving regular rotation on radio shows like RinseFM, SubFM and KissFM among others. Their releases have appeared on international labels like Echodub, Mutek Records and their most recent release Fonica, was just released via Canadian label Crude Records and featured a remix from DJG.
While their self produced works speak for themselves, Daega Sound has also become quite well known for their live shows. Their appearances at BassCoast and the ShahDJs 5 Year Birthday Celebrations, the last two shows where I caught Daega live, were filled with their own works and channeled bass greats, if you’re fans of artists like Digital Mystikz or Pinch you will be in your element. Blending an eclectic mix of driving, almost techno like 4/4 beats alongside heavy irregular bass hits, their sets gradually built in intensity and provide a unique journey for the listener that is so seamless, you barely notice the changes until you’re fully engulfed in them.
The mix Daega has provided for us features 12/16 originally produced tracks that will be familiar to you if you’re already a Daega fan. Vancouver is spoiled to have the duo playing monthly and we’re very stoked to be featuring them on the site for all our Dub Selekta viewers.
