Last week we kicked off the beginning of our pre-Shambhala coverage in a smashing interview with the destroyer himself, Dieselboy. But this week we’ve got a fresh new mix for you from one of the artists who is headlining two of the stages at this year’s festivities. Dan Solo, one of the driving forces behind Calgary’s bass scene and a cutting edge innovator himself, has dished up the first installment in our podcast series and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
One part of the duo Sanctums, another part of the duo Piranha Piranha and a great producer and DJ in his own right, Dan Solo will be playing both the Beach Stage and The Fractal Forest at Shambhala this year. Although if you don’t know Solo through his music then you might know him via his work with The Rinse Out and Modern Math in Calgary, a music and art collective label and club night. Having brought scene giants like N-Type, Breakage or XI to more local acts like some of our west coast homies like Max Ulis, Michael Red and Self Evident, Modern Math is the crew pushing the underground vibes.
This particular mix that Solo has dished up for us is a nice blend of 130bpm sounds that we’re really currently feeling, very suitable for both stages at the festival. Mixing up familiar and unfamiliar alike, Solo keeps things poppin as he flows through sounds from Machinedrum over through newer stuff from Salva and Grenier and through some tracks from Rwina and Embassy (both labels who have been pushing big sounds this year.) All the while sprinkling in bits of the Beastie Boy’s classic track, Shambhala, often where you’ll least expect it. And with Shambhala rounding out the end of the mix, you’ll catch yourself grabbing for that back button before you know it and playing the mix again.
For more info about Dan Solo, be sure to checkout Modern Math on fb or his own soundcloud page. And for more info on how you can get yourself to Shambhala (there are some crew positions still available) then be sure to checkout the website!
