If you’re feeling like we are right now, full of candy and slightly lethargic due to a weekend of fall festivities, then you need a cool down to help you ease back into regular life. We have just the solution to those aches and groans courtesy of Neon Steve, the latest artist we are stoked to feature as part of our podcast series.
A good friend of ours here at Dub Selekta, Neon Steve is one of the most talked about emerging artists here in Western Canada. And for good reason; he’s held down top spots on Juno Breaks, Hype Machine and Soundcloud Hot charts in addition to winning Hush Nightclub’s 2010 DJ Challenge. Although he’s signed with the Funky Breaks label Bombstrikes, Neon Steve is comfortable playing all genres and dabbles in everything from funk and disco all the way over to the bass heavier side of dubstep and drum and bass. While this particular podcast is a step away from what you can expect to hear from him if you catch him playing live, it’s a great showcasing of his impeccable track selection and technical skills.
After listening to the podcast a few times one will begin to pick up on the progression through the genres, it’s so natural you may not actually notice it! Moving through everything from Funk and Hip Hop over to a bit of midtempo Dubstep and Moombahton then finishing up with a nice dashing of House (but not the pounding-in-your-face kind of House music!) We have been listening to this mix for the past week and it hasn’t gotten old; the subtle genre progression makes it easy to get to the end and start right back over again at the beginning.
When asked about his thinking behind this mix, Neon Steve had this to say:
Well once a year I filter through my ever growing collection of smooth jams and put together a chilled out mixtape. I’ll never get the opportunity to play out most of these tunes so I figured I’d make a mix to keep them from getting lost or forgotten in my harddrive. I named the mix “Opposites Attract” because most of the stuff in here is quite the opposite of what you might catch me rinsing out at a gig.

[...] Opposites Attract: Dub Selekta Podcast 6.0 – Neon Steve I hate to be bias but this mix was such a big one, had some of the biggest hits we ever had on Dub Selekta, and was made by a good homie. The Opposites Attract title was not given to it lightly and with the tracks hitting the middle road between so many genres it makes my list. [...]

No it’s just because we’ve had so many downloads of the mix that it’s maxed. We’ll have an updated link for everyone later today. Thanks!
